It is the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world and is a template for all festivals that have followed. In addition to contemporary music, the festival hosts dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, and other arts. It is known for its hippie ethos, counterculture roots, and iconic stages such as the Pyramid Stage.
